These are images of Nirmalabai Jadhav made one late evening in Korgaon in north Goa. She was crossing the village square when I first noticed her. When I went up and asked if she would agree to a portrait, she was moved to tears.

As soon as I saw the figure of Mahadeo Bali one evening in Korgaon, I knew that I had a great subject for a portrait. The first image below is a candid, moments before he saw me with the lens pointed at him. There is something very Goan about him. Men of this manner and look won’t be around for long.

We had a close shave with the barber of Korgaon sometime ago. Today we meet Suresh Hiroji, the tailor of Korgaon, an enchanting village in north Goa. Once the staple of all, rich and poor, bespoke has now gone out of fashion. Hiroji and his tribe are on their last legs but the perpetual grin on his visage is eternal.

The first two images below were taken in July this year. In the first, a candid seen from the street, the logo of the Merritt sewing machine invented by Isaac Singer is visible. The final image was made in 2009, at a shutter speed of 1/20s, a demonstration of the excellent image stabilization capabilities of Canon’s EF 24-105L lens.

I must have accrued a small credit of positive karma when we got to Látrabjarg, for we were fortunate to spend some glorious moments in the company of the midnight sun. Látrabjarg is Iceland‘s (and Europe’s) westernmost point and one of the world’s great bird cliffs.

In the summer months at these high latitudes, the sun lingers over the horizon for quite a while around midnight, showering upon the landscape an ethereal stream of honey-dipped photons. It makes for a scene that is pure manna to just about anyone with a soul.

With its sweeping views of the Arabian Sea, the bluff at Vagator on Goa‘s northern coast is an atmospheric location. On a recent outing, I had the pleasure of recording the bliss experienced here during sundown by young and old alike. The first four images below are of my little niece Saraswati.

A February morning in my ancestral village of Parra in Goa. My last name derives from it: Parrikar means of/from Parra.

The first two images were made in a paddy field, currently looking wild and untidy pending cultivation during the monsoon season. The glistening grass following a night of heavy dew sharpens the foreground and the low mist in the distance imbues a picture of serenity.

Intercepting the first rays of the sun at the edge of the field is the Church of St. Anne (1649), seen in the third photograph. The Sunday morning mass was in session and a lone devout figure at the side entrance to the church caught my eye (last photograph). She was absorbed in the proceedings and took no notice of me.
