I was born and raised in Goa. I moved to the USA in 1988 for graduate study and obtained a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
My photographic interests lie in Landscape, People, and most aspects of Culture. I don't do Weddings, Fashion, Sports, or Wildlife. Goa and Iceland together serve as my lodestar. The stark desolation of the Death Valley in California holds a special appeal.
My work in Goa encompasses the land, its culture, and its people. I have documented the decay of Goa‘s environment and sui generis ethos thanks to India’s malign influence.
Over the last 14 years I have traveled all over Iceland in an ongoing exploration.
I am also a musician with a lifelong immersion in the musical traditions of India.
Silicon Valley in California was my home for 25 years. I now live in Iceland.
My images are an expression of my aesthetic temper, not a documentation of “reality” (situations when I have my photojournalist hat on excepted). As a general principle, I strive to preserve the integrity of the scene before me. I do not insert objects that were not already present in the frame at the time of capture. However, I may erase objects that are a distraction to the composition. My artistic impulse is best expressed in the words of the mathematician Hermann Weyl:
"My work always tried to unite the true with the beautiful; but when I had to choose one or the other, I usually chose the beautiful."
